Dyson & Womack Studio partnered with artist Andy Scott to realize The Calling, a monumental 90 x 35-foot sculpture that has since been recognized with the SEAOC Excellence in Engineering Award. Our scope encompassed full design development, structural engineering, fabrication, and installation of the work. Fabricated entirely by hand using traditional shipbuilding techniques, the sculpture was composed of thousands of individually cut stainless steel “feathers” that interlock to form a massive, self-supporting figure with no internal armature. This extraordinary feat of craftsmanship and engineering required the piece to be disassembled into 64 segments, loaded onto twelve 40-foot trucks, and transported to Minneapolis, where our team meticulously reconstructed the work on site. The result is a landmark artwork that exemplifies both technical innovation and timeless artistry.
